Coding with Hania

Coding with Hania is a transatlantic educational initiative on a mission to make computer science more inclusive to women and minorities. My passion for using cutting-edge technology as a means of knowledge exchange to empower underrepresented groups in tech led me to co-found this initiative. I believe that every individual should have access to the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in the digital age. That's why I've developed a holistic curriculum that is tailored to make code education accessible to young members of underrepresented groups in tech.

Traditional teaching methods are not inclusive for everyone, which is why Coding with Hania (CWH) employs unique teaching methods that cater to different learning styles. CWS strives to make coding more inclusive to draw the interest of students who have been led to believe that they have no place in STEM fields through societal beliefs. Our projects listed below showcase our work in making computer science more accessible through design and social media. We're excited to share our knowledge and resources with you, and we hope you'll join us in this journey of making computer science more inclusive for everyone.

Projects

Youtube Channel

CWH's YouTube channel is focused on teaching complex computer science (CS) topics in a way that is easily digestible and fun to follow through the use of great visuals, animations, and design. The creator of the channel, Hania, is a visual learner and found that YouTube videos helped her throughout her CS courses. Once she mastered the topics she once struggled with, she was able to create videos that went deep into difficult topics and broke them down into clear and understandable pieces. She uses her design and video production skills to produce high-quality videos that make it easy for viewers to understand complex CS concepts. The channel is designed to help viewers learn and enjoy computer science through interactive, engaging, and visually-appealing content.

CS Girl Columbia

The digital ethnography is a comprehensive study of the experiences of a Black woman studying computer science at Columbia. The ethnography was created in the form of an Instagram page, which aims to encourage women and people of color (POCs) to pursue a degree in computer science. The page features honest and raw posts that depict the struggles and challenges of studying computer science, as well as the rewards and triumphs. The overall goal of the ethnography is to demonstrate that studying computer science can be challenging, but the challenges are worth it and can be overcome by anyone, regardless of their race or gender. The page serves as a valuable resource and source of inspiration for those considering a career in computer science.

Tiktok Channel

CWH's TikTok page is focused on showcasing the power of computer science (CS) and coding through fun projects. The page features a variety of projects that Hania builds on things she is passionate about, such as the environment and fashion. By demonstrating how CS and coding can be used to create projects related to personal interests, the page aims to encourage and spark interest in CS and coding among young girls. Through the use of short and engaging videos, the page provides a glimpse into the exciting possibilities of CS and coding, and helps to demystify these fields for young viewers. The goal is to inspire a new generation of young girls to explore the world of computer science and coding, and to see the potential in these fields.

Op Ed: Reinventing the way we teach code

This op-ed discusses the need to revolutionize the way code is taught in order to increase diversity and representation in the tech industry. It argues that traditional methods of teaching code, which focus solely on technical skills, are not effective in engaging underrepresented minorities and fostering their interest in technology. Instead, the author suggests a holistic approach that takes into account a child's individual interests and incorporates them into the learning process. This approach, the author believes, would be more effective in encouraging underrepresented minorities to pursue careers and degrees in tech. Additionally, it suggests providing mentorship and other resources to support underrepresented minority students as they progress in their studies and enter the tech industry.

Coding Notes

Hania's coding notes are a comprehensive set of visually appealing notes on a variety of complex computer science (CS) topics, ranging from different data structures. Hania recognized that traditional CS notes are often bland, boring and hard to follow, and set out to create revision notes that are clear, easy, and fun to follow. Utilizing her skills in design and attention to detail, she has been able to create beautiful notes that are accessible to all. These notes are designed to make it easy for students to understand and retain information, and to make the revision process more enjoyable. The notes are a valuable resource for anyone studying computer science or looking to improve their knowledge of CS topics. Hania's notes are a great example of how design can be used to make complex information more accessible and engaging.
